FAQ's

What is Tallow?

Tallow is an Animal fat made from suet, the hard white fat around the kidneys of cows.

The suet is then rendered down and filtered (all by us) to create Tallow.

Tallow is an ancient skincare essential and it has a naturally high concentration of fatty acids so it acts as a natural emollient to help soothe and soften skin- bringing particular relief to those with dry and itchy skin conditions.

Tallow is also non-comodogenic, so it will not clog your pores or cause breakouts

How do we make it?

The suet is sourced from a local South Australian farm. The otherwise waste product is then dry rendered at a low temperature to preserve all the good stuff.
There is no need for any added preservatives or chemicals because this 100% natural product has a long shelf life. Once it is filtered we then add our combination of other natural skin loving ingredients and voila it is ready to use.

Can I use Tallow on my face?

La Mucca's Tallow + Avocado and Tallow + Cocoa balm are perfect for your face, they are carefully formulated to nourish your skin and neither will clog your pores. Just remember, a little goes a long way!

What is the texture of the Tallow balms?

La Mucca's Tallow balms are silky smooth, slightly thick but very spreadable. The balance and formulation means it will not turn runny or melt in the warmer weather.

How should I store my Tallow?

Store at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Whilst it will not melt in room temperature in the warmer weather, Tallow is similar to other natural fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil and will get softer in warmer environments and become harder in cooler temperatures. We advise that you avoid getting water in your Tallow jar. Wash and dry your hands before application.

Can La Mucca Tallow balms be used on babies and children?

Yes, our customers love giving feedback to us with how it is helping with cradle cap, nappy rash, heat rash and other newborn skin conditions.
Whilst all our balms are safe and have safe amounts of essential oils for babies 6+ months we do recommend our Tallow + Cocoa balm for newborns up until 6 months as it has no essential oils.

Can I use La Mucca Tallow balm during pregnancy and postpartum?

Yes, for sure! Our Tallow balms can be massaged into that forever growing belly, cracked nipples, dry lips and to soothe stretchmarks. There are zero toxins, so they aid in healing, nourishing and nurturing your body during this stage of life. Just remember we are not medical professionals, so if you have any concerns be sure to consult one

Are your Tallow balms Hypoallergenic?

Our balms are made with just a few simple, natural ingredients—nothing unnecessary, nothing you can’t recognise. We believe skincare should be as pure as possible, which is why you won’t find any synthetic additives, fragrances, or harsh chemicals in our products.

Tallow is the star ingredient, packed with naturally occurring fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids that deeply nourish and support healthy skin. We’ve paired it with only a handful of other natural ingredients to create a gentle, effective balm that hydrates, soothes, and helps balance your skin’s natural oils—without clogging pores.

You’ll never find thickeners, synthetic fragrances, silicones, preservatives, parabens, phthalates, or sulphates in our products—just 100% natural, skin-loving ingredients.

For those with extra-sensitive skin or little ones, our Tallow + Cocoa Balm is free from essential oils and naturally carries the light, comforting scent of pure cocoa butter.

What is the shelf life of my balm?

If you keep it away from water and it remains clean you will get 12 months out of it.

Exfoliation tips:

  • We recommend gently exfoliating your face a handful of times per week, depending on makeup usage, exercise and skin types.
  • We stock Konjac sponges to form part of your tallow routine. These will gently cleanse and exfoliate your face removing light makeup and dead skin cells.
  • Once you have used your sponge keep your face a little damp, and now it is the perfect time to apply one of our balms.
